On Monday, Bob Dylan turns 80.

 Unlike so many musicians, he has not tried to deny his advancing years, but fully embraced them – something clear in both his words, and the growly, lived-in voice in which he sings them. Dylan’s songs now remind us that the past is inescapable, and age and experience ought to be treated with the utmost respect.

 And in doing so, they capture an understanding that surely settles on us as we get older: that few things are in any way new, and if we want to even begin to understand what’s going on, we should start by looking back.

Photographer Daniel Kramer’s work captures even the most iconic of individuals at their most candid and calm. Over the course of a year and a day, Kramer spent time with one of those icons, Bob Dylan. From being backstage at tours and concerts to moments of quiet, Kramer and Dylan’s time together ended up as a mesmerising portfolio of what would become Bob Dylan’s breakthrough year.
 Over 1964 to 1965, Kramer captured Dylan breaking through to superstardom, from the renowned Lincoln Center’s Philharmonic Hall concert with Joan Baez to the now-famed performance at Forest Hills, when Dylan first transited to electric guitar. An ever-evolving musician, Bob Dylan and his constant, cryptic state of becoming is encapsulated so succinctly in Daniel Kramer’s work.

For America, 1968 was a convulsive year: riots, assassinations, Vietnam and the election in November of Richard Nixon. For Bob Dylan, 1968 was a year of withdrawal and rural domesticity. Elliott Landy had taken photographs for the Band’s debut album that Dylan had liked.

Here, two-year-old Jesse, mouth full of sandwich, is looking more comfortable with the camera than his dad, who, with glasses off and cigarettes at the side of the table, is without two of the props that were in so many photographs of him two long years before. This is perhaps as close to the real Bob as you’re going to get.Jesse is now a video director, activist and campaigner.
 Bob Dylan will be 75 this month and releases his 37th studio album, Fallen Angels, this weekend. Landy moved to Woodstock shortly after this photo session. He’s still there.

The Times They are A-changing

Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra has just finished his latest artwork located somewhere on the streets of Minneapolis in the USA.
This massive wall, entitled as “The Times They are A-changing”, is 92 feet high by 150 feet long and depicts the American composer and musician Bob Dylan in three different stages of his career.
