Paradise Lost

Photograph: Iain McGregor/The Guardian

Henderson Island, uninhabited and a day’s sea crossing from the nearest sign of civilisation, should be an untouched paradise. Instead its beaches, which were awarded Unesco world heritage status in 1988, are a monument to humanity’s destructive, disposable culture. Along a 2.5km stretch of sandy beach, an estimated 18 tonnes of plastic has accumulated over decades at a rate of several thousand pieces of plastic every day.

How to Craft Your Own Paper Mache Sculptures

Paper mache—derived from papier-mâché, or “chewed paper” in French—is a sculpting medium made up of paper pieces that have been bound by an adhesive paste. Today, two popular methods are predominantly used to craft a paper mache creation. For the first technique, the sculptor glues together long, narrow strips of paper that are usually laid and layered atop some sort of frame. For the second technique, the sculptor creates a pulp by boiling or soaking bits of paper joined by water. The mixture can then be molded like clay. Though these methods differ in both preparation and procedure, both share a composition comprising paper and paste.

Rutger Hauer, star of Blade Runner, dies aged 75

His website announced the news, saying that Hauer had died on Friday “after a very short illness… Rutger passed away peacefully at his Dutch home”.
Born in 1944 in Breukelen, Hauer served a short stint as a medic in the army before finishing his training as an actor. Verhoeven cast him in his first significant screen role in the 1969 TV series Floris, before giving him a role in his 1973 feature Turkish Delight. After completing a number of films for Verhoeven, Hauer gained attention in Hollywood playing a brutal terrorist in the 1981 Sylvester Stallone picture Nighthawks. Blade Runner, though a commercial flop on its release, swiftly became a much-admired cult film, and Hauer became a fixture in both Hollywood and European cinema. The Hitcher, in 1986, was another attention-grabbing role, and the lyrical 1989 Italian drama The Legend of the Holy Drinker won the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival. continue
