Dora Maar’s work

“Portrait of Ubu,” which was widely circulated as a Surrealist postcard, is one of almost five hundred works in a new Dora Maar exhibition at the Centre Pompidou.
But Maar’s work did not begin or end with Surrealism, nor with queasy repurposings of found objects and images. Maar, who was born Henriette Theodora Markovitch, in 1907, and lived to be eighty-nine, was several sorts of artist in the decade or less that her photography had free rein.
