The Dude (Jeff Bridges) and Walter (John Goodman) star in the Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski. Goodman is outstanding as a deranged bowling-mad ex Vietnam vet in a Big Sleep-inspired film, where The Dude has to deal with German nihilists, kidnapped heiresses and a minicab driver who throws him out of his taxi for making a disparaging remark about the music of The Eagles.
John Turturro plays the New York playwright, Barton Fink, who suffers writer's block in the creepy art deco Los Angeles Hotel Earle in 1941. The character of Fink is based loosely on playwright Clifford Odets (Waiting For Lefty). The 1991 film, which was written, directed and produced by the Coen Brothers, also starred John Goodman as Charlie Meadows, a crazy and violent travelling salesman. Barton Fink won the Palme d'Or, as well as awards for Best Director and Best Actor (Turturro) at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival.
