EU skeptic wins the first European Parliament elections in Croatia

An EU sceptic has won the most votes at the first European Parliament elections in Croatia held on Sunday. Ruza Tomasic, a former police woman in Canada and the leader of the right wing HSP AS, has won the most votes despite of being clearly an EU sceptic for months. "I'll represent Croatian interests in EU and will try to protect it", she has said. Ruza Tomasic was in coalition with the opposition HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) and they together have won 6 posts in European Parliament defeating the ruling coalition of SDP (Social Democratic Party) and HNS (Croatian People's Party) who have won 5 posts. The Liberal Party, also in opposition, has won 1 post in European Parliament. Croatia will join the EU on 1 July. There were only around 20 percent of voters that have attended the Sunday elections. Croatian Times Online News
