"Croatian men may be a species of their own that do not fall into the established pattern of men who cheat more during the time of a recession, Zagreb-based psychiatrist Vera Folnegović Šmalc has claimed.
The University of Kansas scientists have discovered that with the onset of recession, men feel threatened in their role of a "provider" and overcompensate with what the Daily Mail calls "turbocharged sex drive."
Study author Professor Omri Gillath quoted by the Daily Mail said: "We're biologically wired to reproduce, and the environment tells us the best strategy to use to make sure our genes are passed on."
Similar thing happens when people face the possibility of dying.
"If you think you might die soon, there's a huge advantage for a man to use short-term mating strategies - to make sure there are a bunch of offspring and hope that some of them survive - but women can't do the same thing."
In the time of recession, the man's "survival mode" is on, the study shows.
But Croatian men are different, says Folnegovic Smalc.
"Croatian are exceptionally faithful to their wives, and their reaction to recession is special," says the psychiatrist. When a Croatian feels the recession could potentially affect his family, he does everything in his power to change it.
"He will not run after other women," nor succumb to depression as long as he feels he has the power to change his situation.
"Those states are a consequence of inability to change something, so as long as the person is looking for a way out, it not logical he would be experiencing them," Folnegovic Smalc said."
