Animal Moms Have Their Ways
Orangutans are some of the best foster mothers in the animal kingdom.
Orangutans are slow-growing animals and produce probably the lowest number of offspring for mammals over a lifetime. A female tends not to mate again until her offspring is four years old and will keep her baby with her constantly until it is eight years old.
Unlike many other animals, orangutans have an unusual motherly trait. If a female orangutan has been killed or taken away, another female will step up to raise and protect her offspring as her own.
