Despite the nature of the case, the church had to hold its line against abortion, Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho said in an interview aired Thursday by Globo television.
'The law of God is higher than any human laws,' he said. 'When a human law — that is, a law enacted by human legislators — is against the law of God, that law has no value. The adults who approved, who carried out this abortion have incurred excommunication.'"

I'm disgusted not only because I'm a nurse, I'm disgusted, primarily as a human being.

Hi, Slavenka (Thats your name, right?)!
Im a reader from Brazil and I follow your blog almost a year. Nice blog, congrats.
Well, about this excommunication thing, Im an atheist, but I cant tell the bishop was wrong. You see, he was just been coherent to his beliefs and laws of his religion. The catholic dogmas are, in my opinion, stupid, but they arent a law that pop up weeks ago. Its has been that way for centuries. People here in Brazil can choose their religion among a bunch of them, and I think when you choose a religion you have to fully understand what it means to your life and respect whatever their rules are.
If I was excommunicated, it would mean nothing to me, I dont believe in any of their shit, but if I was catholic I should have to accept the excommunication if I had failed with the rules. Because thats what religion is about. You cant have only the good parts.
If someone is catholic and yet dont like it that way, than he have a choice: Stop being a catholic and you can get all the abortions, have sex with all the condons you want. Simple.
PS: Sorry about the awful english, Im a self-educated...
Hi and thank you for your comment.I'm glad that you read my blog.
Here in Croatia people are very religious like in Brazil.
I must say that I'm not ,but it doesn't mean that I don't have
respect for people which are religious.I can't agree with
the opinion that the bishop is right because he respects church laws, because these laws aren't set in stone, for example, they changed the rule that children don't end up in limbo just recently. After all, these laws are made by people, not by god, and thus can be changed. Of course, that's only possible if people voice their opinion on these laws, so they can be changed accordingly. Religion should be about morality, not about dogmatism, at least imho.
Have a nice day.
