Debt payments by the 50 countries most vulnerable to the climate crisis stand at their highest level in more than three decades.
The Debt Justice charity said countries at the highest risk of being affected by global heating were paying 15.5% of government revenues to external creditors – up from less than 8% before Covid-19 and 4% at their lowest recent point in 2010.
Using data from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the charity said its new report showed the urgent need for comprehensive debt relief so that poor countries could invest in measures to tackle the climate crisis.

Record breaking heatwave hits Delhi
Temperatures in Delhi have soared to record highs of 49.9C as authorities warn of water shortages.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which reported “severe heatwave conditions”, recorded the temperatures on Tuesday, saying they were nine degrees higher than expected.
Temperatures are rising and the clock is ticking.
Not that gardening can stop climate change, but what if gardens could connect us with the natural world, make us more aware of the destruction all around us?
What if we rise up, garden by garden, park by park, balcony by balcony and do something – anything – to help a bee or a butterfly or a bird or a hedgehog?
What would our world look like if more of us were tuned into the life systems that support us?

Flock of 100 feral chickens torments village.
Dwellers in Snettisham, Norfolk, have said their life is being made “hell” as the chickens swarm in from a nearby wood.
It is unclear who owns the land the chickens live on, but villagers believe numbers have soared recently.
