Man steals 13,500 Euros of meat for alleged Presidential party

"A 48-year-old tried to steal almost 100,000 kunas (13,500 Euros) worth of sausages and ham by claiming that he was organizing a party on President Ivo Josipovic’s behalf.

He conned the meat firm Mesoprerada into handing him over 13,500 Euros worth of cured meat products, the daily Jutarnji List writes.

The man phoned Mesoprerada from a mobile, introducing himself as an employee of a non-existent firm he called Medical that was contracted to organize an event for the Croatian President Ivo Josipovic.

After reaching an agreement with Mesoprerada, he faxed a deposit slip of 98,222 kunas stamped by the non-existent firm.

The man agreed with the meat company that the merchandise would be delivered on December 21 in Zagreb’s Sesvete neighborhood, where he waited for the driver to arrive. The two then went to a petrol station where they transferred 75,000 kunas (10,149 Euros) worth of meats into the fraudsters car before Mesoprerada called their delivery man to let him know that money had not yet been deposited to their account.

The conman suggested that the two go to his firm's headquarters in order to look into the problem, but as soon as he got into his car he stepped on the gas and fled the scene.

The deliveryman managed to note down the fugitive's license plates. The Croatian police then arrested the culprit, the daily writes.

The Office of the President denied any knowledge of the affair and has confirmed that the 48-year-old is not their employee."

Veterinarian

"One Sunday, while counting the money in the weekly offering, the pastor of a small Florida church found a pink envelope containing $1000. It happened again the next week.

The following Sunday, he watched as the offering was collected and saw a little old lady put the distinctive pink envelope in the plate.

This went on for weeks until the pastor, overcome by curiosity, approached her.

'Ma'am, I couldn't help but notice that you put $1,000 a week in the collection plate,' he stated.

'Why yes,' she replied, 'every week my son sends me money, and I give some of it to the church.'

The pastor replied, 'That's wonderful, how much does he send you?'

The old lady said, '$10,000 a week.'

The pastor was amazed. 'Your son is very successful; what does he do for a living?'

'He is a veterinarian,' she answered.

'That is an honorable profession,' the pastor said. 'Where does he practice?'

The old lady said proudly, 'In Nevada. He has two cat houses in Las Vegas and one in Reno.'"

Heart shaped potato grown in Mratovo

Keen gardener Marica Jelic could heart-ly believe it when she pulled this oddball potato from her vegetable patch.

The misshapen spud emerged from a crop growing in her back garden in Mratovo, Croatia,

"At first I thought someone had played a prank on me but then I saw the roots were still attached and it was the real thing," said amazed Marica.

Now - after snapping the bizarre veg - Marica plans to turn it into potato dumplings for her husband.

"This time I can really say I put my heart into it," she said.

Would I lie to you?

"Is lying a vice or a pragmatic virtue? Opinion over the centuries is divided. 'Every violation of truth is not only a sort of suicide in the liar, but is a stab at the health of human society', believed Ralph Waldo Emerson. Nietzsche put it more forgivingly: 'That lies should be necessary to life is part and parcel of the terrible and questionable character of existence.' But sages agree on one point: a liar will not be believed, even when they speak the truth; one falsehood spoils a thousand truths."

Fireworks blamed for deaths of 3,000 black birds

"The red-winged blackbirds rained out of the darkness onto rooftops and pavements and into fields a fireworks display held just before midnight. One struck a woman walking her dog. Another hit a police car.
Birds were "littering the streets, the yards, the driveways, everywhere," said Robby King, a county wildlife officer in Beebe, a community of 5,000 northeast of Little Rock. "It was hard to drive down the street in some places without running over them."
In all, more than 3,000 birds tumbled to the ground. Scientists said that fireworks appeared to have frightened the birds into such a frenzy that they crashed into homes, cars and each other."

110-year-old man finds 82-year-old willing to be his wife

"Ahmad Mohamad Isa, who has 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, told Malay-language newspaper Utusan Malaysia earlier this week that he wanted company and a wife to take care of him.
The report grabbed the attention of 82-year-old Sanah Ahmad, a widow of 30 years and mother of nine, who said she was willing to do so and had asked her children to contact Ahmad’s family to make arrangements.
“It doesn’t matter who she is, as long as she can cook for me,” Ahmad told the paper Sunday. “It is lonely to live alone and I am afraid to sleep alone. If I have a wife she can take care of me,” the centenarian, who has five previous marriages and suffers mild hearing and vision problems, said in an earlier interview.
Four of his wives have died and he divorced the fifth.
Mrs Sanah told the paper that she was attracted to Ahmad as he bears a striking resemblance to her late husband and both men shared the same name."

Al-Qaeda-inspired militants blamed for Egyptian church attack

"As newspapers warned of 'civil war' between the country's Muslims and its Coptic Christian minority, officials said a number of arrests had been made.
They said they were investigating a group of radical Salafi Sunni Muslims based in Alexandria, which was not under 'foreign command' but may have been inspired by the international terrorist group.
Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the offshoot that has been fighting an often sectarian war in that country, had issued public statements criticising the Coptic Church.
One, two weeks ago, called for local people to attack Coptic targets.
Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Egyptian analysts said that al-Qaeda, which has had little impact locally in the past, appeared to be 'announcing its presence'."

Dolphins, honey guides and golden eagles are man's best friends

"The ability of dogs to fetch a pair of slippers, assist the blind or help round up sheep may be well known.
But there are many other creatures in the animal kingdom who are just as adept at working for humans.
While South American fishermen use dolphins to help them catch fish, tribesman in Africa employ birds to find honey and hunters in Asia train young eagles to bring down prey for them.
They are among examples of animal behaviour known as 'interspecies collaboration', where wild creatures have evolved to work with humans to help them find food.
Experts believe these relationships provide clues about how humans first learned how to exploit wild animals before training them and later domesticating them."

Why the Human Body Temperature Is 37°C

"Scientists have found the reason why our body temperature is 98.6° Fahrenheit (37°C). Apparently it's the perfect balance, as it's warm enough to prevent fungal infection but not so hot that we need to eat nonstop to maintain our metabolism.

Scientists have always wondered why advanced mammals are so hot compared to other animals. And this might be the reason! Fungal species that can thrive and infect an animal typically declines by 6 percent for every 1° C rise in temperature. So, we know we need a higher body temperature to ward off fungal infection. The question is how warm?"
