Man steals 13,500 Euros of meat for alleged Presidential party

"A 48-year-old tried to steal almost 100,000 kunas (13,500 Euros) worth of sausages and ham by claiming that he was organizing a party on President Ivo Josipovic’s behalf.

He conned the meat firm Mesoprerada into handing him over 13,500 Euros worth of cured meat products, the daily Jutarnji List writes.

The man phoned Mesoprerada from a mobile, introducing himself as an employee of a non-existent firm he called Medical that was contracted to organize an event for the Croatian President Ivo Josipovic.

After reaching an agreement with Mesoprerada, he faxed a deposit slip of 98,222 kunas stamped by the non-existent firm.

The man agreed with the meat company that the merchandise would be delivered on December 21 in Zagreb’s Sesvete neighborhood, where he waited for the driver to arrive. The two then went to a petrol station where they transferred 75,000 kunas (10,149 Euros) worth of meats into the fraudsters car before Mesoprerada called their delivery man to let him know that money had not yet been deposited to their account.

The conman suggested that the two go to his firm's headquarters in order to look into the problem, but as soon as he got into his car he stepped on the gas and fled the scene.

The deliveryman managed to note down the fugitive's license plates. The Croatian police then arrested the culprit, the daily writes.

The Office of the President denied any knowledge of the affair and has confirmed that the 48-year-old is not their employee."
