"Oppenheimer" dominated, as expected.

Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer has triumphed at this year’s Oscars taking home seven awards including best picture, best actor and best director. The drama, telling the story of the “father of the atomic bomb”, lost the box office battle to Barbie during last summer’s Barbenheimer showdown but has now won the awards war with Greta Gerwig’s Mattel comedy winning just one Oscar for best original song.

 Cillian Murphy was named best actor for his performance, beating out Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright, and Robert Downey Jr was named best supporting actor, up against Robert De Niro and Ryan Gosling. 

Emma Stone pulled a surprise, beating out favourite Lily Gladstone to be named best actress for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’s offbeat period comedy Poor Things. It’s the actor’s second best actress Oscar after previously winning for La La Land. 

The film also picked up awards for production design, hairstyling and makeup and costume design. Jonathan Glazer’s German and Polish-language Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest was named best international feature, the first ever British film to win in this category. The film also won for sound.

2022 Oscar Predictions, Richard Brody

The expansion of the Academy in recent years has fostered a more representative membership, a younger membership, and a more international membership. This evolution has corresponded with an unprecedented contraction in studio filmmaking, along with a shift, likely enduring, of viewers’ interest and money toward streaming.

 If the streaming services decide to produce more of the sorts of movies that get Oscar nods, it’s doubtful that the Academy will turn up its nose up at them in defense of the so-called theatrical experience, which is already on life support as a commercial outlet for new films of artistic ambition. 

 It’s cause for celebration that two instant classics, “Licorice Pizza” and “Drive My Car,” are among the ten Best Picture candidates at the 2022 Oscars.

Olivia Colman and Sir Anthony Hopkins star in The Father

 Film drama Nomadland has scooped three Oscars including best picture, while British stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Daniel Kaluuya have won acting awards. Nomadland's Chloe Zhao made history as the first woman of colour and second woman to win best director. Sir Anthony, 83, is the oldest winner of best actor, while Kaluuya is the first black British actor to win an Oscar - for the best supporting award.

 British actress-turned-writer/director Emerald Fennell won a screenplay award. She won best original screenplay for Promising Young Woman, which she also directed. Frances McDormand won best actress for her role in Nomadland, while veteran South Korean actress Yuh-Jung Youn won best supporting actress for Minari.

Bong Joon-ho won best director and best original screenplay as well as best picture.

 South Korean film Parasite has been named best picture at this year's Oscars, becoming the first non-English language film to take the top prize.
 Renee Zellweger won best actress for playing Judy Garland in Judy.
 Joaquin Phoenix was named best actor for Joker.
 Brad Pitt and Laura Dern scooped the supporting acting awards for their roles in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Marriage Story respectively.

 Green Book won three trophies in total, including best picture, which had been widely expected to go to Roma. Bohemian Rhapsody won the most awards in total with four, while Roma and Black Panther also won three each.

The Shape of Water, a romantic fable about a janitor who falls in love with a sea creature, has swept top honours at the Oscars in a ceremony which turned into a battle cry for inclusion and female empowerment.Frances McDormand, who won best actress for playing a grieving, furious mother in Three Billboards, created one of the night’s most memorable tableaux by asking all female nominees to stand in the Dolby theatre. Oscars 2017: Best reactions on Warren Beatty’s major goof-up

Someone is getting fired tonight because there was a major disaster at Oscars 2017 that took place tonight. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway apparently got the wrong card when they opened their envelope to announce tonight’s winner of Best Picture. When Beatty opened the envelope on stage, he appeared to either be confused or that he couldn’t exactly read what was written. Dunaway ended up making the La La Land announcement. What followed was a heart-stopping moment the stars and producers of La La Land were stopped midway through their acceptance speeches, before being forced to hand their trophies to the stars of Moonlight that actually won the award.
 The terrible end to the show left the audience gasping in horror, stunned by the mishap.
