North Korea executed man for listening to K-pop

A 22-year-old North Korean was publicly executed for watching and sharing South Korean films and music, a new report claims, highlighting Pyongyang’s desperate attempts to stem the flow of outside information and culture.
The case, detailed in the 2024 Report on North Korean Human Rights released by South Korea’s unification ministry on Thursday, compiles testimonies from 649 North Korean defectors.
According to an unnamed defector’s testimony, the young man from South Hwanghae province was publicly executed in 2022 for listening to 70 South Korean songs, watching three films, and distributing them, falling foul of a North Korean law adopted in 2020 that bans “reactionary ideology and culture”. The report details extensive efforts by North Korean authorities to control outside information flow, especially targeting the youth.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump clash in first 2024 presidential debate.

The reality of the 2024 presidential contest is setting in now that the first debate of the election cycle showcased the two main options voters have in November.
Joe Biden, apparently sick with a cold, mumbled through the debate, failing to land otherwise well-crafted lines. Donald Trump, a prolific purveyor of falsehoods, repeatedly told lies and avoided answering tough questions.
The prevailing reaction to the debate was one of resignation and disbelief that these two candidates were their parties’ choices to lead the country at one of its most critical moments.
Whether the debacle will sway undecided voters toward one candidate or the other remains to be seen.

Good Boy

Every week, a golden retriever named Charlie peeks out his Charlotte, North Carolina window until the Sunday coffee truck rolls in and parks across the street. He then runs outside and waits in line.
"Woof," he politely barks when it's his turn to order.
And after serving this four-legged customer for a year now, the mobile barista has no problem translating Charlie's "I'll take the usual" order. One pup cup coming up!
 See both videos here.

Where the Wild Things Are

A growing body of research is collecting data on species threatened wildlife learning to thrive in urban spaces alongside humans. These findings also complicate the long-held idea that cities cannot be hotspots for animals and plants, and that conservation is something to do far away, in untouched places.

Croatia braces for first heatwave.

The State Meteorological Institute has issued a heatwave warning.
The first day covered by the warning is Thursday.
Moderate danger is expected across the country, except for the wider Gospić region. However, conditions will worsen on Friday, with a severe heatwave warning for most of Croatia. Only the wider Gospić, Knin, and Rijeka regions will have a moderate warning.
Severe Weather has forecasted high temperatures and the heat dome effect.
Temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-to-high 30s in many countries and could potentially exceed 40°C for the first time this summer.
The most significant temperature anomalies are predicted for central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula, according to Severe Weather.
This week, temperatures in central Europe, the Balkans, and eastern Europe are forecasted to range from the mid-30s to over 40°C.
