Everyday memories of Addis Ababa

Beginning as a Tumblr page, website VintageAddis.com invites Ethiopians to share old photographs from family archives, and aims to document the lives of communities throughout the 20th century. The web project and Instagram feed started by Philipp Schütz, Wongel Abebe and Nafkot Gebeyehu, reveals an intimate view of the city.


Terefe Berlie Asmare moved to Addis Ababa in 1980 and spent much of the next decade driving.
He worked at a garage in the Ethiopian capital by day, and studied engineering by night.
At weekends he would roam the countryside in his father’s car, with a tent bought from the German embassy in the boot, and a Konica in his pocket.
