The New Yorker's first GIF cover

The New Yorker – famous for its front-page art – has unveiled its first animated cover. Its animation, Rainy Day, was created by German artist Christoph Niemann. It shows a yellow New York cab seen through the window of a car, with raindrops falling down the windscreen.

Mike the Chicken Lived for 18 Months Without a Head

Like any person "running around like a chicken with its head cut off" a headless chicken does, indeed, run around crazily and without much thought—at first. But if that chicken is Miracle Mike, a chicken that actually spent 18 months without a head, the phrase takes on a new meaning. To be a chicken with its head cut off, if that chicken is Mike the headless chicken, is to embark on a national tour and to be profiled in Time magazine. It is to spend your days drinking a milk-water mix dropped down your exposed throat from an eyedropper. And it is to die, when that eyedropper is accidentially left behind, a relatively calm death, in a motel room.
But let's begin with Mike's decapitation.

Amelia and the Animals

Robin Schwartz’s photo-series Amelia and the Animals documents her daughter alongside animals as Amelia has grown in the past 12 years of her life. Schwartz’s photographic practice is predominantly of animals, but her daughter is the main focus of these photographs.

Woman in Peugeot Jumps Tisno Bridge

A 58-year woman from the Dalmatian town of Šibenik who made headline news on Monday after completing a ‘James Bond-esque’ jump in her Peugeot over the raised Tisno bridge, has been slapped with a 250 kuna (32 euros) fine by police.
Šibenik police spokeswoman Marica Kosor confirmed that the woman was fined after she ‘jumped’ the bridge, which was raised around two and a half metres, at around 9:00am on Monday morning, despite saying in her defence that she did not notice the bridge was raised because of the strong sun glare which was in her eyes. The bridge, which connects the island of Murter with Tisno, is raised twice daily, at 9:00 and 17:00, so boats can pass through the canal.via

Yes, indeed, cows can leap.

You know the nursery rhyme:
 Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon.
 The little dog laughed
 To see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Modern Farmer magazine, which is currently celebrating "Cow Week," took a good, hard look at the bovine portion of that rhyme. Tyler LeBlanc wrote this expose of sorts, and NPR's Wade Goodwyn asked him whether a cow jumping over the moon is as ridiculous as a cat playing the violin.
Here's what he says.

Croatia Flooded

A large part of Croatia is under water today as many parts of the country are unable to cope with the persistent heavy rain which has fallen over the last few days across the northern Balkans… After areas on the Dalmatian coast flooded on Thursday, including the town of Vodice which saw dozens of homes and business premises flooded and kids evacuated from the local kindergarten, Saturday has claimed more victims. One of the worst effected areas is the central town of Karlovac, where sirens went off at around 9:10am on Saturday to declare a state of emergency. All hands are on deck as river levels rise. The two rivers which run through the town, Kupa and Korana, measured very high levels on Saturday morning (790cm and 778cm respectively) with more waves of water expected to come later today. Buses are taking residents in nearby areas to safety after the town’s Mayor made the decision to evacuate the area at 9:30am this morning.

The world's worst stuffed animals

Even at its best, taxidermy is a bit creepy. But just look what happens when the taxidermist gets a bit ‘creative’.
A new book takes a look at the most atrocious examples, from a winged cat to a bushbaby with a doll’s face.
