At the start of a parliamentary session in Zagreb on Thursday, deputies of the Croatian Labour Party entered the Sabor Hall by carrying shorts on sticks in order to point to the grave economic situation on World Social Justice Day, observed on 20 February.
"The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 20 February as World Day of Social Justice with the aim of eradicating poverty and ensuring access to dignified work and equal opportunities in employment for everyone," Labour Party leader, Dragutin Lesar, said at the beginning of this performance.
Having in mind the economic situation in Croatia and the proposed labour legislation amendments, social justice in Croatia seems to be reduced for a majority of Croatians to the message: you have been left only with your shorts on a stick, said this opposition politician. Labour Party MPs also carried massages on banners on 380,000 Croatians out of work and 180,000 earning only a minimum wage. They warned in this performance that 60,000 workers had not yet received their overdue salaries.
The performers also brought a model of small horse-driven coach in reference to a recent statement by Education Minister Zeljko Jovanovic whether critics expected him to be driven in a horse carriage after the public was outraged at the purchase of luxury cars for government officials. In the meantime, the minister has apologised for that "rush statement". via
