"The police have been trying to pressure me to just pay the bill, trying to scare me, warning that if I don't pay I'll be in more trouble," a furious-sounding Mr Ai told The Telegraph by telephone.
"China is so rich and powerful, but it is a country without law."
The tax demand, which was served by two officials who came to Mr Ai's Beijing studio on Tuesday morning, is the latest clash between China's authoritarian state and Mr Ai who repeatedly used his celebrity to draw attention to the lack of civil and political rights in China.
