"Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said that the sentencing verdict against general Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, notably a thesis on the existence of a joint criminal enterprise was a serious and legal act which is shocking.
After the ICTY tribunal's trial chamber convicted Gotovina and Markac of grave crimes on Friday, Josipovic told reporters that many citizens were disappointed and were having hard time accepting such a verdict.
Whatever the verdict, it does not bring into question the legitimacy and legality of the Homeland War and its military operations, the president said.
Josipovic added that Croatia was aware that crimes had been committed in the Homeland War on all sides and that the Croatian judiciary was prosecuting those crimes, regardless of who had committed them.
The president said Croatia respected the international legal order and that it expected that many of the theses stated in the verdict would be thoroughly examined and eventually refuted."
