"Patrick Dougherty, a sculptor, weaves tree saplings into whirling animated shapes. Each piece takes three weeks to build and depends on the efforts of a fresh cadre of volunteers. Mr. Dougherty has made more than 200 pieces in sites all over the world — wooly lairs and wild follies — some woven into groves of trees, others lashed to buildings. In August, he built this piece, 'Natural History,' in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, as part of that institution's centennial. It will be up at least until next August. (Most of Mr. Dougherty's works break down after two or three years in the wild.)"
