Pooch provides blood for a transfusion that saved his sick pal's life

"Charlie the golden retriever and Dougal the Labrador have always been best friends - but now they are also blood brothers."

'The two dogs are so sweet. When we took Charlie down to give blood, he padded through to Dougal who was in his little cage and they greeted each other.

'I definitely think that Charlie knew something was wrong. He rushed up to him at the vets and they licked noses and whined at each other. It was very interesting and emotional to watch.'

Mrs Briggs Wilson said Dougal was allowed home after two days recuperation and was now well on the road to recovery.

She added: 'When Charlie came round they were delighted to see each other. Dougal wasn't able to jump and prance around, but Charlie was terribly good with him.

'The vet was fantastic - the whole team - I can't thank them enough. It was late at night and they did a great job.

'I would have done anything - moved heaven and earth - to make sure Dougal was okay. There's still a little way to go but the vet is pleased with his progress.'

Miss Stollery said she did not have to think twice about helping Dougal because the two dogs were so close.

She said: 'Charlie stays with them when I am away and we often walk together. I can't describe the scene adequately when he was brought into intensive care to see Dougal and greeted him with a lick and gentle whine, and Dougal's joy at seeing us. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.
