Clinton vs. Trump: The Best Burns, Worst Jokes, and Most Memorable Lines of the First Presidential Debate

Clinton, speaking to Trump across the transdimensional divide:
Donald, I know you live in your own reality, but those are not the facts.

Trump, military historian: Just go to her website:
She tells you how to fight ISIS on her website. I don't think general Douglas MacArthur would like that too much ... You're telling the enemy everything you want to do. No wonder you've been fighting ISIS your entire adult life.

Inuktitut does have a written language, but it’s just not an alphabet.

Instead, as Tom Scott explains, it uses a related system of symbols to express sounds called an abugida. This writing system is in use in the far north of Canada and was originally invented by Christian missionaries. Inuktitut—which can use one compound word to say the equivalent of an English sentence—is built on consonant/vowel pairs. In order to accommodate the language’s sounds and structure, a new set of symbols was developed. (Because different parts of the Arctic were colonized at different times though, Inuktitut is only somewhat comprehensible by people in Alaska or Greenland.) In written Inuktitut, a letter’s shape determines the consonant sound while its rotation shows the vowels that follows it, e.g. ᐃ or ᐊ. Diacritical marks tell a reader if the vowel sound is long or short, and superscripted symbols show how the sound ends, like the ᖅ in that stop sign image. As a writing system it’s both elegant and alien, so if this is too difficult to visualize, check out Tom’s video here.

What did Al Capone do while in the pen for tax evasion and contempt of court?

A letter now on auction sums up his leisure activities in two words: prison band. A 1938 letter from Capone to his son is currently for sale at RR Auctions, a Boston-based auction house that specializes in rare manuscripts.
It’s a rare letter, indeed—the missive, which is expected to bring in more than $50,000, gives an intimate look at the daily life of one of the most hardened gangsters in American history.

So why hasn’t ET called us back?

There are plenty of obvious answers. Maybe there are no intelligent space aliens in our immediate cosmic vicinity. Perhaps they have never evolved beyond unthinking microbial slime or – based on our transmissions – aliens have concluded it is safer to stay away.
There is, however, another explanation: ET is nothing like us.

T-rex on a Jetski

Who knew a crappy T-rex costume we once all dumped on would turn out to be one of the best things to happen to the internet? In this video Mark Gomez dons the inflatable dino suit and thrashes a jetski around a lake. The fact that he can still perform mid-air twists and flips without going extinct himself is beyond impressive.

An indigenous community's battle to save their home in the Amazon

There are currently over 60 major hydroelectric dam projects in the Amazon. The third largest project is the Belo Monte on the Xingu River, Brazil, which has already displaced 20,000 indigenous and riverine people. Aaron Vincent Elkaim documents the story of the Munduruku tribe, who are fighting against the industrialisation of this region.
