History Unzipped

This is no illusion – what you’re looking at is literally the facade of an abandoned building peeling away from the structure itself, a gigantic metal zipper running down the center.
The surreal installation entitled Open To The Public makes use of a building slated for demolition, the zipper referencing its past as a leather and textile manufacturer.
It’s just the latest jaw-dropping facade manipulation from sculptor Alex Chinneck.

Denialism

Denialism is an expansion, an intensification, of denial. At root, denial and denialism are simply a subset of the many ways humans have developed to use language to deceive others and themselves. Denial can be as simple as refusing to accept that someone else is speaking truthfully. Denial can be as unfathomable as the multiple ways we avoid acknowledging our weaknesses and secret desires. 

From vaccines to climate change to genocide, a new age of denialism is upon us.

Europe heatwave

Europe could break an all-time temperature record in the next few days. And parts of southern Spain and Portugal are forecast to go above 47C (116.6F), surpassing national records. But if you couldn't tell from the thermometers, there are giveaways everywhere - from a melting mountain in Sweden to a rumoured Brussels sprout shortage.
 Here are just some of the developments - some weird, some disturbing - that the heatwave has sparked across the Continent.

 

Will Grizzly Bears Survive Being Hunted?

Bear numbers might be greater than they were in the ‘70s, when over-hunting, human expansion and a general effort to eradicate carnivores seen as dangerous to humans and livestock saw the species’ population plummet as low as 136 bears in the wild, but that doesn’t mean they are stable enough to allow for sport hunting, said Bonnie Rice, senior representative of the Sierra Club in the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Rockies Region.

Why Island Birds Have Bigger Brains Than Their Mainland Counterparts

It’s a classic chicken-versus-egg quandary: Are big-brained—and therefore smarter—birds more likely to find their way to islands, or does island living trigger brain growth? Scientists have long suspected the latter, but all they had to support the claim was anecdotal evidence. Now, a new study published in Nature Communications provides data that confirms the connection between brain size and island environments, vindicating previous researchers—and perhaps proving that the phrase “birdbrain” isn’t necessarily an insult.
