13 Hilariously Absurd Inventions That Deserve to Be Real

Given the chance to redesign our world, there would probably be a few things we’d all like to change. Sure we could tackle the obvious ones like restructuring poorly designed highways or creating an effective mass transit system for a sprawling metropolis, but let’s get a little more creative than that. For instance, what if we could genetically modify peas into squares, so they’d stop rolling around on our plates? Or turn shrubs and lawns into sponges to prevent flooding? What would happen if you carried around an umbrella with a built-in garden on top? Sure, you wouldn’t save the world, but it might become a more interesting place. These fanciful ideas are just a few examples plucked from
Dominic Wilcox’s sprawling notebook of clever inventions.

Facebook, the world’s most widely used social network, celebrates its 10th anniversary today.

It’s come a long way from its beginnings as a wayward Harvard student’s dorm room hack. From Facemash, to “thefacebook,” to its official public debut in September 2006, to its May 2012 IPO, the social network and has undergone some pretty massive transformations in a relatively short time. Today, Facebook has 1.26 billion registered users who record 3.2 billion likes per day. The company can also claim one of the most successful initial public offerings in history, and despite criticism that it’s dead to teens (or dying in general), the social network continues to expand into new avenues and new global markets. But it’s just not the company’s grand $5 billion debut that marks its success as an internet giant. It’s things like News Feed, the Facebook Platform, and other successful experiments that define Facebook and the people behind it. In short, none of the social network’s success would have been possible without constant iteration and innovation. While not everything Facebook tried was a hit , the company learned from its mistakes and moved forward. With that in mind, here are decade’s worth of Facebook milestones.

Wikipedia Archiving Voices So You'll Always Know How Celebs Sound

What's in a voice? To the folks at Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, a voice means a lot. They've begun a project to archive the voices of famous people. Actor Dustin Hoffman, writer John Updike, scientist Jane Goodall and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi are among the audio clips now found in Wikipedia's biographical entries. Formally called Wikipedia's Voice Introduction Project, it aims to collect 10-second sound recordings of anyone with a bio page on Wikipedia. The BBC is helping, by providing a lot of its archival audio through an open license.
Wikipedia expert Andy Mabbett is one of the people helming the project and spoke with NPR.

Coke’s Wild Assertion That Other Languages Exist Stirs Controversy

The Coca-Cola Company ignited a firestorm of controversy on Sunday with a Super Bowl ad that appeared to make the inflammatory claim that other languages besides English exist. From coast to coast, viewers reacted with outrage and horror to what many were calling the most incendiary Super Bowl ad in history. “I was enjoying the Super Bowl with my family, and suddenly, out of nowhere, comes this ad suggesting that there are other languages that aren’t English,” said Carol Foyler, a mother of three from Akron, Ohio. “I grabbed the remote and turned it off. My kids shouldn’t be exposed to garbage that’s just going to confuse them.” The Alliance for Responsible Advertising, a conservative watchdog group that monitors advertising it considers offensive and unfit for family viewing, issued a statement demanding that Coke apologize for the controversial ad and promise never to air it again. “Last night, Coke assaulted millions of Americans with its misguided and inappropriate view that other languages exist,” the statement said. “In the future, we strongly hope that Coke will keep its crazy theories to itself.” Andy Borowitz

Can couples really get stuck together during sex?

Homer described how Mars and Venus were caught together to the "inextinguishable laughter" of the Gods (Joachim Anthonisz, J. Paul Getty Museum collection)

It sounds like a scene from a trashy sex comedy. But stories of getting stuck during sex have been with us for centuries - and some of them might just be true.

Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close

For diehard football fans, nothing beats screaming your lungs out in the stadium alongside tens of thousands of other fans. There is, however, a downside: hearing loss. With the battle among fans to be the loudest crowd getting almost as competitive as the NFL itself, hearing experts say it's time for a serious conversation about the damage caused by crowd noise.
