Meet Romulus the world's biggest donkey!

Romulus the Donkey is set to beat the Guinness World Record as the World's Tallest Donkey. Measured by a local vet in Texas, Romulus is an incredible 68 inches tall, 2 inches taller than previous holder Oklahoma Sam. Romulus and his twin Remus were rescued by owners Phil and Cara Yellott when their previous owner could not afford to look after them.

What To Do On International Women's Day

Being a part of a group is not really my thing. But there is one group of which I am a member, that I didn’t “sign up” for. I was born a woman. Being part of a group called “women” simply means that you most likely have a vagina. When you become a woman, there is no manual, you have to figure out how to “do” being a women by doing it. You watch other women, read magazines, listen to your mother, sister, grandmother. You practice being a woman and adjust how you do it by the reactions you get. For example, wearing a really short skirt gets one kind of reaction from men, another reaction from women. By performing your gender, you learn how to “do” it from how others respond to you. If there is one thing women have in common around the world, other than anatomy, it is that we have to be constantly aware. Women need to be alert to their surroundings not only to avoid possible physical harm to their bodies, they have to be aware of whether or not they are performing their role as women correctly. Because in many societies, if they do not perform their roles correctly, they can be ostracized, or much worse. In many parts of the world, women are in constant danger because of their membership in this group. In too many parts of the world, women are not free.

Silvio Berlusconi convicted over Italy wiretap

Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been convicted and sentenced to a year in jail over an illegal wiretap. He was accused of arranging for a police wiretap concerning a political rival to be leaked and published in a newspaper run by his brother. Mr Berlusconi is likely to appeal and will remain free in the meantime.

To mark World Water Day, on March 22nd Solidarités International and its agency BDDP Unlimited will roll out a campaign to build awareness of the scourge of undrinkable water.

Today, it is estimated that 3.6 million people, including 1.5 million children under the age of 5, die every year of diseases borne by unhealthy water, making it the world’s leading cause of death.

Yet the public isn’t aware of it and political leaders do not demonstrate the drive it takes to end the terrible deaths. The campaign calls on journalists to spread awareness of this scourge and appeal to readers to sign a petition that will be personally handed to the French president during the 6th World Water Forum in March 2012.

To evoke the silent and invisible threat of unhealthy water, BDDP Unlimited opted for a minimalist approach that is both visually appealing and surprising, using water and ink exclusively. The spot shows the power of ink to reveal the invisible.

The spot, created by BDDP Unlimited, produced by Hush and directed by Clément Beauvais, a young director, illustrator, musician and photographer. His multiple talents and mastery of various techniques enabled him to both create the drawings and direct the spot.

The campaign will be seen from mid-March on TV, in cinemas, on the Internet and in print. A dedicated web site, www.votregouttedeau.org, will gather signatures for the petition.

A wildlife photographer taking pictures of a owl in a Californian park was amazed to discover she had unknowingly snapped a tiny owlet - perfectly blending into its mother's plumage. Marina Scarr only realised her pictures showed two owls after she looked at the shot on her camera, taken in Desoto Park, Florida.

Comet Making Closest Approach Ever of Earth

A recently discovered comet is closer than it’s ever been to Earth, and stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere finally get to see it. Called Pan-STARRS, the comet passed within 100 million miles of Earth on Tuesday, its closest approach in its first-ever cruise through the inner solar system. The ice ball will get even nearer the sun this weekend — just 28 million miles from the sun and within the orbit of Mercury.

A plague of locusts?

A swarm of locusts has crossed into Israel from neighbouring Egypt, raising fears that Israel could be hit with a biblical plague ahead of the Passover holiday. The locust alert comes ahead of the weeklong Passover festival, which recounts the biblical story of the Israelite exodus from Egypt.
