Rooster Sunglasses Drive Chicks Wild
Even chickens like to keep a-breast of the latest trends.
So when farmers in Chengdu, south west China, issued their cockerels with these John Lennon-style sunglasses, they couldn't wait to drive the chicks wild with their new look.
But although looking cool, the experimental glasses have a practical use beyond sending the cockrels cock-a-hoop.
They were really designed to help avoid fights breaking out between rival roosters at the free range farm, explained farm owners.
"Because they are allowed to roam around during the day in the open space, it’s inevitable the cocks will start picking fights with each other, so we decided to make them all wear glasses," said breeder Jiang Hau.
"Our cocks are very aggressive by nature. They always fight with each other and cause bleeding and injuries.
"But giving them these plastic glasses to wear means they can’t see each other so clearly so they are much quieter and much more peaceful," he added.
Now other farmers in the region are looking to see how the glasses work out and, if they are a success, say they will give all their cocks the new look too.

Seeing Tiger Stripes Across Sumatra
"“Tiger, tiger burning bright in the forest of the night,” wrote the poet William Blake. Though fewer tiger eyes are showing their fire these days, the future of tigers in the distant deeps of Sumatra may still shine."

Saucy Christmas cards
"A museum has uncovered a collection of Christmas cards by saucy postcard artist Donald McGill. The artist is famous for his comic seaside cards, but now it has been discovered he also produced 250 different Christmas designs over six decades. He published saucy festive scenes from 1904 onwards, featuring his trademark plump wives, big-breasted women, balding bachelors and mischievous maids. He drew at least four different designs every year."

Why That Rich Guy is Being So Nice to You
"There are a lot of ways to make people not like you, but one of the most powerful — if least fair — is to be really, really successful. Nobody resents the guy who just lost his job. But the guy whose Internet start-up made him a billionaire at 25? That's a whole different kettle of envy. Now, a study published by the Association for Psychological Science shows one way the winners of life's lotto get the losers to like them more — or at least dislike them less.
Psychologists Neils van de Ven, Marcel Zeelenberg and Rik Pieters, all of Tilburg University in The Netherlands, have previously studied the phenomenon of envy and have concluded that it exists in two varieties: benign and malicious."

Chinese scientists wear panda suits to prepare cub for the wild
"With all the care of loving parents, these giant pandas gently handle a young cub.
But look a little closer and you will see the pair are in fact of scientists attempting to ensure the helpless youngster is not affected by human influence.
The workers were pictured in China's Sichuan Province carrying out a physical examination of the four-month-old cub while wearing costumes that would not look out of place at a charity fun run."

Egypt shark attacks: authorities 'ignored warnings they had caught wrong predator'
"On Sunday, a 70 year-old German woman, was killed as she snorkelled close to the shore in the tourist resort. The attack was the fifth in the area in a week.
Witnesses, including a British mother-of-two, reported in graphic detail how they heard the victim screaming but they could not see the victim because the shark’s thrashing, as well as her blood, made it impossible to see.
The attack brought panic to thousands of British holidaymakers and other tourists enjoying the winter sun. he day before, the authorities had declared the sea safe after capturing two sharks blamed for the earlier attacks.
But a local conservation group smelled a rat. They noticed that photos taken by a diver of the shark responsible for the second attack suggested the wrong one had been caught."

Hide your personal photos from Julian Assange!
"Only someone with the heart of a concrete robot could fail to feel faintly – just faintly – sorry for the American diplomats whose cables were leaked, what with all that private unguarded chit-chat being made public. If the world had an annual end-of-year office party (which, come to think of it, is a brilliant idea), 2010's would be an awkward affair.
Still, what's most surprising about the mass leak isn't the content – it'd have been more astonishing if they'd said Berlusconi was actually rather charming and North Korea is great in bed – but the fact that this kind of thing isn't happening every day. Because in our terrible modern hell, it's possible for absolutely anyone to leave a comprehensive dossier of ultra- sensitive private information about themselves on the back seat of a bus just by misplacing their phone.
The more these devices are capable of, the greater potential for embarrass-ment. What's on your handset? Intimate texts? Embarrassing photos? Raunchy emails? An eye-opening internet history? I just hope you trust the staff down the Orange store next time you're upgrading your phone."
