Opposites don’t attract

The power of animal magnetism has brought countless couples together, but when it comes to who we fall for, scientists say there’s little truth in the old adage that opposites attract.
A study on romantic relationships found that for more than 80% of traits analysed – from political views to drug taking and the age at which people first had sex – partners were often remarkably similar.

Burning Man stuck in mud

Burning Man festival-goers have been told to conserve their food and water after heavy rain turned the campsite into a mud bath. The weather has been so bad that access in and out of the event in the US state of Nevada has been "halted", organisers said in a statement.
US media reported that more than 70,000 people were stuck there on Saturday.

India successfully launches its first mission to the Sun

India has launched its first observation mission to the Sun, just days after the country made history by becoming the first to land near the Moon's south pole. Aditya-L1 lifted off from the launch pad at Sriharikota on Saturday at 11:50 India time (06:20 GMT).
It will travel 1.5 million km (932,000 miles) from the Earth - 1% of the Earth-Sun distance.

Word on the Street

Economic and political inequality have grown so extreme that many are rejecting democracy.
This is fertile ground for authoritarianism, especially for the kind of rightwing populism that Trump, Bolsonaro and the rest represent. But such leaders have shown that they have none of the answers that discontented voters are seeking. On the contrary, the policies they enact when given power only make matters worse.
Rather than looking elsewhere for alternatives, we need to look inward, at our own system. With the right reforms, democracies can become more inclusive, more responsive to citizens, and less responsive to the corporations and rich individuals who currently hold the purse strings. But salvaging our politics also will require equally dramatic economic reforms. We can begin to enhance the wellbeing of all citizens fairly – and take the wind out of populists’ sails – only when we leave neoliberal capitalism behind and do a much better job at creating the shared prosperity that we acclaim.
