Animal rescue, Canadian-style

When a deer and her fawn were trapped on the thin ice of a frozen harbour in Canada, rescue workers decided it was too risky to go out and help the stricken animal. The mother was exhausted after hauling itself out of the freezing water of Antigonish Harbour in Nova Scotia after repeatedly crashing through the ice and could not even stand up on the treacherous surface. Not wanting to leave the deer and its offspring to their fate, a skilled helicopter pilot hit on an ingenious solution - blow the deer to shore using the downdraft from his helicopter's rotors.

Stephane Hessel dies at 95

Stephane Hessel, the former French Resistance fighter whose 2010 manifesto Time for Outrage inspired social protesters, has died aged 95. Hessel died overnight, his wife Christiane Hessel-Chabry told France's AFP news agency in Paris. A German by birth, he was imprisoned in Nazi camps during World War II for his activities in France. In Time for Outrage, he called for a new form of "resistance" to the injustices of the modern world. Continue reading the main story “ Start Quote To create is to resist, to resist is to create” Stephane Hessel He expressed outrage at the growing gap between haves and have-nots, France's treatment of illegal immigrants and damage to the environment. The Indignados protest movement in Spain was inspired by Hessel's manifesto, according to Spanish media. The 95-year-old's name was the top trending term on Twitter in Spain and France on Wednesday morning, as admirers paid tribute with quotes such as:        "To create is to resist, to resist is to create."

Steve Hanks-The Complete Artwork Collection

Steve Hanks is recognized as one of the best watercolor artists working today. The detail, color and realism of Steve Hanks' paintings are unheard of in this difficult medium. A softly worn patterned quilt, the play of light on the thin veil of surf on sand, or the delicate expression of a child—-Steve Hanks captures these patterns of life better than anyone.

Vulcan tops vote to name Pluto moons

"Vulcan" has topped a public vote to name two recently discovered moons of Pluto. The choice will delight Star Trek fans; Vulcan is the home planet of Spock, science officer on the starship Enterprise. The name had originally been suggested by William Shatner, the actor who portrayed Captain James T Kirk in the Star Trek TV series and films. More than 450,000 people voted in an online poll run by the Seti institute. The California-based organisation - which searches for intelligent life in the Universe - and Dr Mark Showalter, who led the teams that discovered the two moons, offered voters a choice of 21 possible names. Currently, Pluto's two newly discovered moons - spotted in 2011 and 2012 - are known as P4 and P5. Leonard Nimoy, who portrayed Spock, had previously tweeted that Vulcan was the "logical choice".

'Haven't you run before?'

Double Olympic gold medalist Mo Farah was left bemused during a gaffe-filled interview when a U.S. television news anchor mistook him for an amateur athlete. Viewers were left cringing when LaTonya Norton on WDSU spoke to the British Olympian after he won a half-marathon in New Orleans on Sunday, and asked: 'Haven't you run before?' Farah appeared stunned by the foolish question, and paused briefly before asking 'sorry?', as if he misheard the journalist.

Bill Hicks died on this day in 1994.

“The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: "Is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we kill those people.” ― Bill Hicks

The great illusion of the self

(Image: Darren Hopes)

As you wake up each morning, hazy and disoriented, you gradually become aware of the rustling of the sheets, sense their texture and squint at the light. One aspect of your self has reassembled: the first-person observer of reality, inhabiting a human body. As wakefulness grows, so does your sense of having a past, a personality and motivations. Your self is complete, as both witness of the world and bearer of your consciousness and identity. You. This intuitive sense of self is an effortless and fundamental human experience. But it is nothing more than an elaborate illusion. Under scrutiny, many common-sense beliefs about selfhood begin to unravel. Some thinkers even go as far as claiming that there is no such thing as the self. In these articles, discover why "you" aren’t the person you thought you were.
