Van Orton Design Creates Retro Inspired Movie Posters Of Cult Film Classics

Van Orton Design has recreated cult classic movie posters as vibrant digital works of art. The team is a creative collaboration of twin brothers from Turin, Italy. Using digital illustration tools, the brothers have created stained-glass reminiscent, 1970s retro themed images that are unbelievably elaborate and profoundly structured. Each poster is formulated by using the classic “one point perspective.” This is a a formula used by old masters that organizes an entire image based on a single vanishing point in the center. Every line is aimed to draw attention to the exact middle of the work — perfecting it’s perspective while simultaneously controlling the viewer’s eye.
The posters portray a familiar scene from each film.

Succulent Living Wall Planter Kit

When Smithsonian horticulturalist Janet Draper wanted to build a green wall in the garden adjacent to the Hirshhorn musem, she selected the heat-seeking, water-retaining succulents. Starting in March, she planted the fleshy, thick leaf plants into a well-drained potting mixture. “I really was looking for dramatic color and texture,” she wrote, “so I tried to ‘paint’ with the plants by creating patterns through my placement choices.” The result was an eye-catching display that won enthusiastic admiration from visitors enjoying the garden’s meandering pathways. Try Draper’s method using her tips—start four months ahead of growing season under lights, and start them first flat on a table to establish the roots, watering must be closely monitored—employing this artful wall planter kit designed by Heather Auchter out of reclaimed woods at Uncommon Goods.

Marimo Moss Ball Light Bulb Terrarium

Found only in lakes in Iceland, Scotland, Japan and Estonia, marimo are tiny balls of algae that get swirled by the currents into living pompoms. This marimo terrarium, sold by Uncommon Goods, is made from a recycled light bulb that encloses the adorable moss in its own Lilliputian ecosystem, ideal for display on desks or coffee tables. The portable plant ball is very much alive and needs ample light and a change of water every week or so. Here you can find more gifts for science geeks.

Surreal Landscape Photography by Jati Putra

In Jati Putra’s world, gravity doesn’t apply. People, nature and urbanism move around in total freedom. The sky becomes the ocean, dolphins dive in between seas and people enjoy a day at the beach inside a stadium. The pictures’ new aspect and the washed out colors resemble surrealistic landscapes inspired by Salvador Dali. The Indonesian graphic designer knows how to manipulate and distort the simplest sceneries and create bizarre yet reassuring new environments. Using photo manipulation, he flips the main subjects around, alters ‘normal’ angles and shifts his characters into intriguing scenarios.
The process is achieved in an unpretentious manner.
Each picture demonstrates the ability for Jati Putra to envision an imaginary set as close to reality as possible.
